Thekua is a traditional Indian sweet snack that originated in the eastern states of Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. It's a deep-fried cookie made with whole wheat flour, jaggery or sugar, ghee, and flavored with fennel seeds, cardamom, and desiccated coconut. This crispy and crunchy treat is often prepared during festivals like Chhath Puja, where it's offered as prasad to the Sun God.
History of Thekua
Thekua has a rich history dating back around 3,700 years to the Rigvedic period. It was mentioned in the Rigveda as 'Apupa', a sweet dish made with wheat flour, jaggery, milk, and ghee. Initially used for its medicinal benefits, Thekua later became a traditional offering to the Sun God during Chhath Puja.¹
